Second grade students created these fun
color wheels and contrasting color collages! We have been working on color
theory, beginning with primary and secondary colors and then moving into
tertiary, contrasting colors, analogous colors, and neutrals.
Our first project
was a color wheel necklace, which was created by blending Model Magic dough,
matching it to an existing color wheel, and then assembling the colors in
order.
Students
learned how to “read” and use a color wheel to help with color mixing in our
art pieces. For this color wheel project, each student was given an object to
turn into a color wheel. Some items included: a beach ball, clock, peacocks,
fish, an umbrella, and a cake.
We
also created collages by looking at everyday objects, cutting out their shapes,
and composing them with contrasting color pairs: green
and red, yellow and violet,
and blue and orange.
Students then created an imaginary environment for their real object.
Our
final project was the creation of these super cool color-mixing simple machines. Here are the backgrounds painted in neutral colors.
Students then drew various designs using two colors, either both primary or a secondary and primary to create a tertiary color. A video of the machine at work is below!
