Art Car Day!

The Front Line of the Parade
This week, the Lower School celebrated its first annual Art Car Day! All of the Lower School students created their very own personalized art cars and paraded them in front of both the Middle and Upper Schools. We also had guest speaker Mary Forbes, Assistant Director of the Art Car Museum, come to tell us a little about the history of art cars. We found out that Houston has the biggest parade in the world

Eight real art cars came out including Snowdog Ice Cream, Dragonfire (which shot flames into the sky--wow!), Little Bit of Nonsense, The Big Banana, the Hippo Car, a wooden dragster, an alligator car, and even the Radio Flyer wagon car, just to name a few!

A HUGE thank you to all of our art car artists and drivers for coming out to support young artists in the community!

What a fantastic new tradition for the Lower School! It was a day not to forget and a wonderful celebration of our students' creativity.

Pre-K and K students created "life-size" art cars that they pretended to drive around the school! Here are students hard at work on these fabulous creations!

Thank you to all of the parent volunteers, art car artists and drivers, teachers and Kinkaid faculty for making this a very special day!

Crafty Color Wheel Projects by 2nd Grade

Second grade students created these fun color wheels and contrasting color collages! We have been working on color theory, beginning with primary and secondary colors and then moving into tertiary, contrasting colors, analogous colors, and neutrals

Our first project was a color wheel necklace, which was created by blending Model Magic dough, matching it to an existing color wheel, and then assembling the colors in order.
Students learned how to “read” and use a color wheel to help with color mixing in our art pieces. For this color wheel project, each student was given an object to turn into a color wheel. Some items included: a beach ball, clock, peacocks, fish, an umbrella, and a cake.
We also created collages by looking at everyday objects, cutting out their shapes, and composing them with contrasting color pairs: green and red, yellow and violet, and blue and orange. Students then created an imaginary environment for their real object.
Our final project was the creation of these super cool color-mixing simple machines. Here are the backgrounds painted in neutral colors.

Students then drew various designs using two colors, either both primary or a secondary and primary to create a tertiary color. A video of the machine at work is below!

The Lower School Store: Inspired by the Pop Art of Claes Oldenburg

Claes Oldenburg is a Swedish-American Pop Artist who is best known for his supersize soft sculptures made with vinyl. Oldenburg creates everyday objects such as food, appliances, and other familiar household objects and puts them into art museums. In the 1960’s, Claes Oldenburg created a pretend “store” in which he put his art pieces on display. Many customers would stop in expecting to be able to buy the yummy looking food in the display cases, only to discover they were made with paper mache!

Oldenburg's "Store"

Our fourth grade students sculpted these delicious-looking treats out of ceramic clay. They also created a household object out of paper mache using a foil armature. These lessons were great experiences with 3-D art and planning artwork that can be viewed in the round.
